During the Holiday Season, we all tend to generate a lot more trash, which can complicate garbage disposal. It’s to be expected, but managing all those extra items can present some challenges. Here are some garbage disposal tips to make things a little easier on yourself (and on us too!): Be sure you know the holiday collection schedule and consider recycling during the holidays to minimize waste.

* When it comes to garbage disposal tips, don’t advertise your new toys to everyone driving by your house. So, you got a huge flat-screen TV from your wife for Christmas? That’s great, but don’t set the box out by your container for everyone to see. Break it down and put it inside 13-gallon bags, or better yet, you can help avoid incurring an extra fee due to going over your bag limit on your next statement and take it to the recycling center.
* When you get new items, don’t automatically throw all the old ones in the trash. If you were blessed with a new appliance, piece of furniture, or electronic item, check if the seller has any type of exchange program. Another option, if the old items are still in good condition, is to look for places to donate them. Someone in need or just setting up a household might really appreciate that couch. Some items, such as toys with rechargeable batteries, can even be harmful if placed in the trash, so be sure you’re disposing of these items properly.
* Remember the weight limit when it comes to garbage disposal. It may be tempting to shove as much trash in that bag as you can, but the 12-15 lb. limit (for bags) still applies during the holiday collection schedule. If your bag is deemed too heavy, it will likely NOT be picked up.
* Split it up. If you have a large number of extra bags, consider putting a few bags out each week rather than all at once. Just choose the bags you’re saving for next week wisely, ensuring they don’t contain anything that will smell up your garage, house, or garbage can.
* Be prepared for us to arrive at any time. During the holidays, your pickup can vary more than usual. A big increase in the volume of trash we collect can cause our routes to run earlier or later than usual.
* Understand that your next invoice may contain extra charges. Any time you go over your bag limit, there will be a charge for each extra bag. If you don’t know what your limit is, contact us.
